Costa Rica Celebrates 200 Years as a Nation Today!

Today, Costa Rica, or the “Rich Coast”, turns 200 years old. On Sept. 15, 1821, a Central American congress signed “The Act of Independence” asserting that Guatemala, El Salvador, Honduras, Nicaragua, and Costa Rica were free and independent of the Spanish Empire.

Unlike other countries in the Americas, there was no fight for independence in Central America. Depleted by the war with Napoleon Bonaparte, and a few Latin American wars, Spain actually supported Central American independence because the region had become a burden.

For the Mes de la Patria, or “Month of the Nation,” Costa Rica celebrates its independence day on September 15. The national holiday is marked by patriotic parades, the hoisting of the flag, and performances by local students. Community parades are a must-see event.

Costa Rica’s national flag is striped blue, white, red, white, and blue. The color blue signifies the sky, white is for peace, and red is for the warmth and courage of the Costa Rican people.

30% Off Green Season Special

If you are thinking about a trip to Costa Rica this fall, don’t let the weather stop you.  Or the price!  Travel from September 1 to November  15, 2021, and save 30% on your choice from ALL of our available accommodations.

Costa Rica enjoys just two seasons annually as opposed to four. The wetter rainy or “green” season lasts from May to mid-November. The dry season lasts from November through April.

Many locals will tell you the rainy season is their favorite time of year. It’s easy to find reduced rates, there are far fewer tourists, and the rain is often limited to a few hours each afternoon, and perfect sunny days at the beach aren’t at all unusual.

In fact, lineups for activities and attractions are minimal this time of year, so if you like jungle zip-line tours or want to enjoy excursions through our many parks and historical sites, now is a great time to go. Less time is spent waiting, while more time is enjoyed participating!

Yes, it rains during the green season, sometimes a great deal. But it also offers the lowest travel and accommodation costs, an opportunity to avoid other travelers, and some of the most spectacular skies and sunsets all year round.

This time of year also brings an explosion of life: Costa Rica at its greenest.

Costa Rica’s Renewable Energy

Stunning waterfalls, exotic animals, rich jungles — these are all reasons to visit Costa Rica. That’s why Costa Rica is committed to protecting its environment by using mostly renewable energy.

In 1948, the president of Costa Rica, José Figueres chose to eliminate the military, providing the country with millions of dollars that would have been spent on government defense. This money has now been invested in renewable energy generation, as well as social programs.

In 2019, Costa Rica supplied 99.15% of its electrical energy from renewable sources. These sources include hydropower, wind power, geothermal energy, biomass, and solar power. Costa Rica is lucky to have a geographic advantage that makes it able to supply enough energy to support the entire country. Most of the energy comes from hydroelectric plants, due to the extreme amounts of rainfall each year.

The Origin of the Name “Costa Rica”

Did you know that Costa Rica means “rich coast”?

When Christopher Columbus came to Costa Rica in 1502, he believed that the land was filled with precious metals, like gold. Because of this belief, he called the land “rich coast”, or Costa Rica.

Though Costa Rica did not end up being a mining hub, its riches lie in other places. For example, Costa Rica is full of life, with the highest density of biodiversity of any other country in the entire world, despite only taking up approximately a third of a percent of Earth’s landmass. Costa Rica is also famous for its rich soil, from which sprout Costa Rican coffee beans and bananas. Finally, Costa Rica is rich in vibrant culture, which stems from a blend of indigenous heritage and Spanish colonial influence, along with the mosaic of other immigrants to our beautiful country.

We feel lucky to live in one of the richest places on Earth. Pura vida!

Monkeys of Costa Rica

One of the attractions that constantly draws tourists to Costa Rica is its incredible biodiversity. Most people look forward to seeing the exotic animals that Costa Rica is lucky to be home to — including the monkeys!

There are four species of monkeys that are native to the forests of Costa Rica: the Central American squirrel monkey, the Panamanian white-faced capuchin monkey, the mantled howler monkey, and the spider monkey. A running joke in Costa Rica is that there are more monkeys than humans, meaning there’s a good chance you will see one on your visit. If you don’t see one, chances are that you will hear one, instead — especially a howler monkey. These monkeys, the largest of all in Costa Rica, howl to their fellow monkey friends, and are extremely loud!

Tulemar Resort is just steps away from Manuel Antonio National Park, where many of these monkeys call home. We offer tours of Manuel Antonio National Park, where guests will earn about the jungle and all of the creatures who live there. We look forward to introducing you to the locals!
